Internal Bleaching
Internal, or “non-vital” bleaching is performed to lighten a discolored tooth that has undergone root canal therapy. A chemical oxidizing agent is placed in the pulp chamber of the tooth to remove the discoloration from the inside out.
The “walking bleach” technique is a common method utilized by endodontists. In this procedure, a restorative material is placed on top of the canal orifice (opening) as a base and the bleaching gel is applied inside the tooth and left for several days with a temporary filling in place. You should return to the office to have the bleaching gel removed and re-applied as necessary, depending on the discoloration.
